OISIN IN TIR-NA-N-OG.

Oisin was the son of Finn Mac Cumhaill, leader of the Fianna. Oisin grew into a very brave warrior like his father and became a leader of one of the bands of the Fianna at a very early age. He lived answering the needs of the people by doing good deeds. He was content in what he did and couldn't imagine another way of life. One morning in Summer Fionn and the Fianna were hunting with Oisin by the shores of Loch Lein in Kilarney. Out of the mist came a beautiful young woman, riding a snow white horse.
Fionn spoke to her and she told him that she was Niamh Chinn Oir, Niamh of the Golden Hair,  daughter of the King of Tir-na-n-Og. She gazed on Oisin and thought that he was the most beautiful man she had ever seen. She invited Oisin to travel with her to Tir-na-n-og, the land of youth. She promised him all his hearts desires including that he would never grow old.
Oisin climbed on the white horse and off they went, over bog and mountain until they came to the sea. The horse galloped out over the water and after a long journey they reached Tir-na-n-Og.
The King had great welcome for them and that day they were wed.
Oisin was very happy here and did not feel 300 years going by as time passes differently in the land of Faerie than it does in the land of men. He longed to see Fionn and the Fianna once more.
Niamh agreed to let him go but warned him not to step on the soil of Ireland or he would never be able to return.
Oisin rode the white horse to Ireland to discover that everything had changed and that Fionn and the Fianna were long dead. He decided to return to Tir-na-n-Og. As he travelled through Gleann na Smol he saw some men trying to lift a heavy rock. He bent down to help them, his saddle strap broke and he fell to the ground.

A great change came over Oisin, all the years that he had been in fairyland caught up to him in the wink of an eye and suddenly he was 300 years old. They brought him to St Patrick and Oisin told Patrick all about Fionn and the Fianna and the warriors of Ancient Ireland and about Tir-na-n-Og. When he had told him everything St Patrick baptised him and Oisin died.
